On April 2, 2014 at 6:50 pm, the Springfield Fire Department dispatched Engine 4 and Car 1 for reported a smoke condition from a barbecue grill at 112 New Brook Lane. Car 1 arrived and reported a one-story single-family residence with a moderate smoke condition coming from the front door. Fire Chief James Sanford established command and upgraded the incident for a full response. The residents were found to be evacuated and all accounted for.

A gas barbecue grill fire was located on a three-sided patio with an awning. Springfield Engine 4 entered the residence and knocked the fire down with a portable extinguisher. A hoseline was stretched to complete the extinguishment. A Kenilworth ladder company was called to assist with smoke removal and extensive overhaul.

The fire caused the exterior windows to shatter which extended heat and smoke into the structure. The brick façade surrounding the patio area prevented the fire from entering the exterior walls. The fire was held to the exterior with fire damage to the patio furniture and smoke damage to the interior. The fire was placed under control at 7:07 pm. Firefighters remained on the scene to remove the smoke odor and allow the brick façade to cool down.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or residents. The cause of fire appears to be accidental. Springfield Office of Emergency Management assisted the residents until a family member arrived to determine if temporary relocation was needed. The residents were able to remain in their home.
