At 2:23am on Sunday April 6th, the Springfield Fire Department dispatched all units to a reported building fire at 72 Colfax Road. The first engine company arrived and reported a two-story wood frame single family residence with heavy fire conditions in the garage, extending into the structure. The large amount of fire created an exposure problem to the adjacent residence. Springfield Police alerted the residents in the surrounding homes and neighbors believed that the residents were away.
Springfield Engine 4 requested a second-alarm and stretched 2 ½” hoseline to protect the adjacent structure and attempted to control the large body of fire. Fire Chief James Sanford arrived and assumed command. Springfield was assisted on the second-alarm assignment by Millburn, Summit and Union Fire Departments. An interior search and fire attack was performed. Interior crews worked to control the fire in the attic, exterior walls and garage. Westfield and Scotch Plains Fire Departments responded on the third-alarm request.
The fire was stopped in the attic and crews extinguished the remaining fire on the first and second floors. The fire was placed under control at 3:23 am. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or residents. It was confirmed that the residents were not home at the time of the fire.
Springfield First Aid Squad and the Union County EMS Task Force provided rehabilitation support to the firefighters. The Union County Fire Investigation Task Force conducted the post-fire investigation. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Springfield Office of Emergency Management assisted with scene security while the building was boarded-up. The building is not habitable and the residents will need relocation.
