Temple Sha'arey Shalom Presents
A Concert of Yiddish Song
in Memory of Longtime Temple Member

"Shpil Zhe Mir A Lidele"
- Sunday, June 1, 4 pm -

Temple Sha'arey Shalom of Springfield invites the community to a concert of Yiddish songs, "Shpil Zhe Mir A Lidele," on Sunday, June 1, at 4 pm. This special event is being presented as a tribute to the memory of longtime Temple member Salo Enis, who passed away in October, 2013, at the age of 96.

Humble and modest, Mr. Enis, a Holocaust survivor, was a tremendous inspiration to all who knew him. Born and educated in Poland, he emigrated to the United States after World War II. In addition to a professional career in engineering, the former Springfield resident was an adult-education teacher of Jewish literature, a mentor, and a klezmer music lover, composer, and performer who played the cornet well into his 90's.

Cantor Amy Daniels, the Temple's Musical Director, will be joined by Cantor Janet Leuchter for this inspirational musical program celebrating the life of one of the synagogue's most beloved members. "Salo Enis reminded me of the 'Yiddishkeit' I felt when talking to my own father," said Cantor Daniels. "Beyond that, he was a scholar who would always comment on any piece of music I sang in Hebrew or Yiddish; he always knew the background of the text and the composer. This concert of Yiddish song is a tribute to Salo in that we want to continue to share the rich heritage of Jewish music with the community."

Cantor Daniels has a background in folk and classical music and has performed in numerous concerts of Jewish and cantorial music with the New Jersey Cantors' Concert Ensemble.

Cantor Janet Leuchter is known for her study and performance of Yiddish folk song. Active in the Klezmer revival, she has taught at the Yiddish Folk Arts Program ("Klez-Kamp") and performed in many well-known NYC spaces such as Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors and the 92nd Street Y.

The entire community is invited to this special afternoon of Yiddish songs. For more information, contact the Temple office at [email protected].
