As part of a year-long initiative to raise money to aid the Maasai tribe in Africa and other hungry people throughout the world, Saint James the Apostle School has planned several events as a final push to reach their goal of $5,000 to “Fill the Ark” and purchase a share in one of Heifer International’s livestock initiatives.  At the end of April they held a t-shirt design contest and a Maasai Masters painting class after school for interested students. In May, there will be lunchtime bake sales, culminating in a final Saturday car wash to be held on June 3. Throughout the month of May, there will be daily ‘Maasai Monday' collections (all loose change welcome!) going toward the $5,000 goal. Why the Maasai tribe? Saint James School has always been known for its support of a wide variety of worthy causes and this year the school was moved by the story of the Maasai Tribe and their “14 Cows for America”.  After the events of September 11, the Massai tribe wanted to help America’s recovery efforts and did so in the most generous way they could – by donating 14 cows to the United States Embassy in Nairobi.  It is the hope of Saint James the Apostle School that they can show their gratitude for such overwhelming generosity by following the example of the Maasai and raising $5,000 to help sustain life around the globe and provide resources to communities that face poverty and hunger on a regular basis. Prior to the Maasai May, the school sponsored dress down days and the students earned money for the collection at home by doing extra chores.
