Brady’s Bunch Improve to 14-1;Earn #1 Seed in State Tourney

There’s a great deal of history being made in Springfield these days. The First Jonathan Dayton High School Lacrosse Team, the First high school lacrosse victory, the First ever Springfield Girls win and the First Play-Off appearance (Not to mention #1 seed) by a Springfield Lacrosse Team.

But before the play offs would begin, the boys would have to go through a week which was sure to test them - playing AA Teams (Our boys are B Team) and traditional powers Summit and Chatham.

Looking for their first ever win against Summit - Gavin Dzikowski found Ethan Outeiro early to get the scoring started - moments later, Alex Gary would also find Ethan, who would finish with 3 goals on the day. Mike Kanarek would score unassisted, before the Dzikowski/Outeiro combination would connect again to make the score 4-0 Springfield. David Ares would connect with Long Stick Middie Anthony Apicella for a second half goal and Gary Mignone would finish the scoring on a beautiful pass from Apicella.

Kanarek would start the Chatham game with an unassisted goal and would finish the game with a “hat trick” on assists from Alex Gary and Ares. Ethan would take a quick pass 5 yards out from Elijah White and put it pass the Chatham goalie 2-0. Dzikowski would then take a pass from Ares with 10 seconds left in the half and fire a 10 yard shot from the left wing to make the score 3-0 at halftime. Apicella started the second half scoring an unassisted goal before Kanarek would score the final two to make the final score 6-3. As usual, in both games -Springfield’s  Nick Stampoulos continued his MVP type of season. But much credit has to be given to that tough Springfield defense -Apicella, Anthony Corigliano, David Greenmail, Cole Kebea, Sam Roth, and Daniel Munoz. Whom like Stampoulos, have played well all season long.

Coach Brady’s boys in their first year in the NJJLL (North Jersey Junior Lacrosse League) went undefeated to win their Division and earn a first round bye. The NJJLL is the only officially recognized youth lacrosse league in the State affiliated with US Lacrosse, and includes over 80 Teams from 10 countys. The are four State Champions crowned (AAA,AA,A, and B) similar to the way high school has Group 1 through Group 4 state champions. The Semi Finals, will played at FMG Middle School on Tuesday May 30th at 6:30pm. If they win - the finals will be held on Friday June 2. Regardless, these boys, Coach Brady, and Special Assistant Andrew DeCicco have had a remarkable season improving from a group of boys that won 2 games in their first two years - to 9-9 last season - to 14-1 Division winners and earning a #1 Seed in the State Tourney.
