Springfield Library’s Museum Passes Offer a Great Way to Spend a Summer Day

               Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Springfield Free Public Library, residents of Springfield are able to take advantage of the library’s museum pass program this summer.   Passes that can be borrowed include the Intrepid Museum in New York City, Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, the Morris Museum, in Morristown, and the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center in Little Falls. 

 

                The museum passes may be borrowed for a period of one week by residents of Springfield who are at least eighteen years of age and who are cardholders in good standing at the Springfield Free Public Library.   The library’s complete policy regarding the use of museum passes can be found at http://www.sfplnj.org/about/policies/museum-pass-policy

 

                The pass to The Intrepid provides admission for up to 6 people to the Intrepid Museum and the submarine, Growler, but does not include admission to the Space Shuttle Pavilion.   More information about The Intrepid can be found at www.intrepidmuseum.org.

 

                The pass to Grounds for Sculpture provides admission for up to four people of any age.   More information about this unique venue can be found at http://www.groundsforsculpture.org.

 

                The Morris Museum pass provides entry to the museum for two adults and up to three children.  In addition to the museum’s famous Murtogh D. Guiness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata, the museum is also known for its collections of fine and decorative arts, costumes and textiles.  Additional information can be found at www.morrismuseum.org

 

                The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center will appeal to baseball fans of all ages.  The pass provides admission to the museum for two adults and up to two children under the age of eighteen.    More information can be found at www.yogiberramuseum.org

 

                The Friends of the Springfield Free Public Library, a volunteer group organized for the purpose of raising money and providing support for the library will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on August 17.   A basic Friends membership costs $10 and new members are always welcome.    Additional library services which are funded by the Friends include chair yoga classes, various programming for children of all ages, The World Book Encyclopedia online database, the library’s annual subscription to Bookpage and Wowbrary, along with support for the library’s annual summer reading clubs.   The Friends’ major fundraising activities for this year include a sale of vintage jewelry and fashion accessories, scheduled for October 1-3.    Application forms for membership to the Friends are available at the library.

SPRINGFIELD LIBRARY OFFERS CANASTA INSTRUCTION FOR BEGINNERS

 

                People interested in learning how to play canasta are invited to sign up for a beginner class that will be offered by the Springfield Free Public Library beginning now and continuing through the end of August.   Taught by a volunteer instructor, classes will be held at the library on Monday evenings from 6:30 -8:00 PM .   Please note that the class will not be held on July 3 and July 10.

                Canasta was developed in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939 and became extremely popular in some parts of South America before being introduced to the United States in 1948.   It is played with two decks of cards and is the only member of the rummy family of card games that is played with a partner.
