Springfield Mayor's Day At Baltusrol A Success

Thanks to our sponsors

On Tuesday, July 6th, on an extremely hot sunny day with temperatures in the 90's, and heat indexes in the 100’s, a group of dedicated golfers participated in the 62nd annual Springfield Mayor’s Day golf outing at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield. The tournament, started in 1960, raises scholarship money exclusively for Jonathan Dayton High School Seniors.

Scott Seidel, Tournament Chairman, commented, “With a summer date and people heading away on long awaited vacations we were not at full capacity but we fielded more golfers than we did in 2020 during COVID.

However we were very fortunate and pleased to have been one of the first tournaments to play on the newly renovated and famous “Lower Course”.    We had a total of 138 golfers between the lower and upper courses.  While a very hot day, thunderstorms and lightning held off until play was completed.”

“To be able to be one of the first groups to play on this newly renovated world famous golf course is a rare privilege and a thrill, and despite the heat, everyone enjoyed the day” commented long time golfer in the tournament and committee member Joel Millman. Committee member Michael Quick said “We were at about 75% of our normal capacity but we still hope to be able to make a nice donation to the Scholarship Fund in June of 2022.  This past June we gave out twenty-two $1,000 Scholarships.”

Dr. Gary Hecht, the Fourth Committee member, said, “Even though it’s been five years since the 2016 PGA Championship was held at Baltusrol the fact that the PGA will return in 2029 keeps our event very popular.”

Jennifer Sherman greeted all the players as they arrived and checked them.  Gennifer Abraham and Amy Roselle, office managers for Seidel and Hecht respectively, provided logistical support in keeping track of all the golfers and their Registrations.   A cocktail hour was held from 515 pm to 615 pm and then dinner and awards followed at 615 pm.

Seidel further commented to the Patriot Times, "Without the generous support of Baltusrol, its Board of Directors, General Manager Kevin Vitale, Head Pro Ryan Fountaine, and all their staff, this event would simply not be possible. I would also like to thank our major sponsors:  Our “Hole in One” sponsors,  Autoland of Springfield and Bridgewater Chevrolet who unfortunately were able to take their cars back after the Tournament!  Each dealer generously placed two cars in the Tournament.  BMW of Springfield provided the grand raffle prize, a BMW bicycle and a BMW Golf Bag.  NJ Winesellers in Greenbrook provided four wine baskets as prizes.  Please check our website later in the year for information on the 2022 Tournament.  www.springfieldmayorsday.com
